The most basic form of transportation - OUR OWN TWO LEGS

  1. And thats the form of transportation we use the least. I know that I dont even walk to my friends house who lives one block away. Technological advances in transportation have made us become quite lazy I would say. Maybe I will take a walk tonight!!

  2. Walking—So Wait…You Actually Want Me to Move?

Walking is the mode of transportation we take for granted most often and it is the one we use the least. The first thing I noticed when we moved from the Northeast to the suburbs was the lack of sidewalks. Sure there are some neighborhoods with sidewalks but for the most part, people are expected to walk in the street. That’s never usually a problem because we suburbanites drive everywhere. When I was growing up, if you needed milk or something you just walked down the corner store or walked to the mailbox. Now, I have to get in the car and drive to Wawa.

At the same time we consider walking so frivolous that we walk to promote charity causes like the AIDS Walk, Diabetes Walk, Breast Cancer Three Day…the list goes on and on. I wonder what the ancients would think of our society today, walking for fun but driving out of necessity.

  3. I agree that walking is such a great form of transportation and is taken for granted by so many of us. I remember having to walk to school in the city as a child and pre-teen an how I never thought anything of it. Now walking a couple blocks a way to the store for a couple items is just too much to do.

  4. Sometimes it is ridiculous the things we use our cars for. Instead of walking to the other store, we try to move down 20 rows and get a closer parking spot. In the mean time, all the time it took to get to the car, park it, and get back-we would have been done in the store already if we had just walked.

  5. Its amazing how specifically us Americans take for granted the fact that we have legs. I have a friend that is from Sweden and because its so cold and the massive amounts of snow, their vehicles are usually frozen. Its nothing unusual for them to walk a 25-30 minute walk through feet of snow to school in the morning, or to a bus stop. In America we would pretty much shut down the town if that happened

  6. My mother has the disease MS. She was diagnosed about two years ago, and walking is a big part of her diet. She walks about 2miles a day and she says she can feel a difference in her energy level when she misses a couple of days. I think that is why in this day and age so many people have the illnesses they have and that is because we became very lazy, especially towards our health.

  7. Walking is the easiest form of transportation...as long as it's not too far. I get tired easily!

  8. It's true - we don't use aur legs as much as we should. As a form of exercise though it's probably one of the best. Easy on the knees and you can do it for a life time. Life long walkers tend to be happier, healthier and better contributors to society.

  9. Well, if we walked like mickey mouse that would explain our reluctance to walk. 65% of America being obese, whatever you live one life. I like to walk, it doesn't show it, but at least you know you can always travel somewhere, as long as they still work..

  11. I much rather walk then drive! Sometimes it can be much safer in a way. People don't get "walk rage!" You were given legs for a reason and that was to get around. If I have to go to the store and I can walk there...I usally do. Not when it's extremely cold out but I chose to walk over driving. It does relax you and make you calmer plus it gives you the chance to enjoy the world around you instead of seeing it at 55 miles per hour.

  12. Although the best transportation is our own two legs transportation have come a long way for society. All transportation depends on technology, whether it is the wheel, the jet engine, or the computer chip. Transportation is not just technology it’s a system of technology, people, energy, money, and more. Advances in technology play a key role in shaping transportation systems, which in turn helps to shape our lives, and culture. Transportation is important to our society. Early years vehicles were pulled by human or animal power. Technology has made transportation cheaper and faster. On the other hand it has made society lazy not wanting to walk a distance that you don’t really need your vehicle.

  13. I think it is more where you live. When lived in Northeast Philly I remember walking everywhere. Everything was in a walking distance. I always walked to school because they only bused the students that lived further away. When I moved to Bucks County I didn’t even live a mile away from school but they made you take the bus to school. Up here almost everything is further away. Like the grocery store and the mall are not in a walking distance. So you are forced to drive.

  14. Walking is truly something we all forget and take advantage of. We forget that there are people out there that can not walk and how badly they wish they could. I love walking places if I can unless the weather is too cold.

  15. Walking is the easiest type of excercise you can get. People, or atleast most of my friends, moan and groan everytime they have to walk a certain distance. But I like to think of walking as an expirence to enjoy what God has created for us. Unless ofcourse it's to cold outside, then I would resort to driving everywhere.

  16. I actually enjoy walking and wish sometimes that I lived in the city so that I could walk to the store instead of having to drive everywhere. When I went to the St. Mike's fair this year I was actually happy because I could walk there from my house instead of having to drive and then find somewhere to park. It seems like our society has forgotten about this simple concept and has resorted to driving everywhere or using some other form of transportation.
